I found the narrator unbearable. I read over half the book and then the end and that was all I could take.

A meandering novel that takes place in an unnamed Latin American country although it seems to most resemble Peru where Alarcon was born. Alarcon does an excellent job of creating memorable worlds populated by melancholic characters. Parts of the book are beautifully written, such as the description of a burgeoning love between two imprisoned men.
