Ugh. I like his Gabriel Allon series a lot but I found this standalone first novel almost unbearable. Convoluted plot, characters about whom I couldn't have cared less, skin-crawling sex and graphic gore, and no subtlety whatsoever. Thank goodness Silva did not continue with this setting and characters in his later works.

More involved plotting than usual from Silva, and full of so many reversals I could barely keep up.
