This is a remarkable book loaded with insight into President Obama as a young man struggling to come to terms with his identity and to reconcile his complicated heritage. In the past few years some of the facts that he was raised to believe were true have been proven to be false but his telling of them is based on what he was told as a child. I read this book long before Obama was a national figure. I became interested because my kids are first generation Kenyan-American, as is Obama. His insights into the challenges facing a person who is not only biracial, but was raised by his white family, while by American racial categories he is "black," are fascinating. Great book by a great man.

I did like this as it tells so much about who the man is and what early life events shaped him. I especially liked the prologue and the fact that the book was written 15 years ago before he had any political ambitions which makes it surprisingly revealing and candid. My only regret in reading this book is that I wish I had gotten it as an audio book (he just won a Grammy for the audiobook). Well, there's always Audacity of Hope for that! :-)
