This book!! I honestly think every one (Muslim and Non-Muslim) should read it. This covers approximately 1400 years of history, from the beginning of Islam right up to a little after 9/11. It's so well written, and detailed just enough that you don't get bored, so no, it's not like reading a history book per se.
