now that I see how wonderful this
author is, I must read it, too.

Vă recomand cartea dacă sunteți iubitori de romane fantastice, de acțiune bizară, de personaje și mai ciudate. Cu toate astea, nu vă veți plictisi nicio secundă pentru că veți fi ocupați să călătoriți, la modul imaginar, alături de celelalte personaje ale cărții.

Too clever by half and too much of a big reveal at the end. The story is fairly dark with evil lurking in every corner, meanness at every turn, but Atkinson is such a wordsmith that you mostly don't mind. There is a very sneaky plot that is unfolded but I wish she had scattered more of the unfolding throughout the book rather than leaving it all to the very end to overwhelm.

Touches on some of the same concepts Atkinson later fleshed out to such heights in the superlative Life After Life, but draws the focus to a family and its historical roots. Isobel remains something of a cipher throughout, but her brother Charles shines out with his intense longing to understand his mother's disappearance.
