For the smoothly interwoven literary references alone, I give this thirteenth book in the Inspector Montalbano series 4 stars. With the theme of the Potter's field in the Gospel of Matthew (30 pieces of silver to betray Jesus), Camilleri cleverly weaves in literary references into the investigation that include Dostoevsky, Shakespeare, Machiavelli and others (some of which I'm sure I missed). What continues to amaze and amuse me about this series i how well the translator conveys the humor from Italian to an English rendition which, I assume retains the sense in both languages. Montalbano is himself a hoot but his underlings in law enforcement make me laugh every time they open their mouths.
