One of the recipients of the 1961 Newberry Medal Honor Book Awards (that same year Island of the Blue Dolphins won the award). Somehow I missed reading this book as a kid. I read it with my kids. They both LOVE it and were pleased to read it a second time. It is a wonderful little story. The bittersweet ending even brought tears to the eyes of my 9-year-old son - despite the fact that this was his second reading and he knew the ending.
