Fascinating stuff and shines a well-deserved light on a little-known piece of WWII history. Definitely gets you thinking about the value of cultural artifacts in times of war and what it takes to preserve them when all of the external forces push the opposite direction.

It's a problematic story, I think, because it's kind of the inverse of most war stories. The Monuments Men arrive on the scene after the fighting is done. They work not to save lives, but to save art. It makes it a trickier thing to capture. And the author is always a short step from hagiography; laying on the praise a little too thick to (maybe) be completely objective. It's a pretty good read, but not on the top shelf of war stories.
