I read this book about 15 years ago and just re-read it. Sort of a story of mourning your lost youth, but only because your adult life didn't turn out so well.

Lorrie Moore walks us through a girl's coming of age, highlighting issues facing her character first as a pre-teen and then later in life. I tore through this book in a couple of days - this is my first Lorrie Moore book, and I bought it as almost everyone commenting on Miranda July's book referenced Lorrie Moore's style. I enjoyed it and would definitely read more of her work; this piece in particular is great for summer, capturing the mystery and imagination of a childhood summer.

Beautifully written coming-of-age story. But I could never quite get a handle on the narrator or her husband or BFF.
That said, every scene felt real. As another commenter said, I could see everything the two girls did together. I could also feel the sense of surprise and bewilderment at how adulthood turned out so differently than expected.
