This is a weighty novel about a painfully troubled marriage. It describes husband and wife relationships that were typical prior to the mid 20th century, but have certainly not disappeared since then either. The story examines goals and offers some strong conclusions. "Wife" is not a good goal even though women have been so typically trained in that concept.
