This story is very loosely based on Tam Lin , which is itself mentioned a few times. A young man is captured by "the Lady" and her folk, and kept till All Hallow's Eve, when the fairies intend to make him pay his 'teind' - by draining him of his power and making him 'nothing'.

The really outstanding part of this novel is the protagonist Katherine (Kate) Sutton, a lady-in-waiting in Lady (soon-to-be-Queen) Elizabeth's court, who is sent to stay at the 'Perilous Gard' because of an error her bim
