Epstein presents slices of life before, during, and after the bombing through the eyes of a U.S. bomber pilot, a young Japanese girl, an American architect who at different times has a hand in building up Japan and (indirectly) in destroying it, and an American officer serving under Gen. MacArthur during the U.S. occupation of the country after the Axis defeat.
