Oh so sad. Unexpectedly sad, somehow -- the blurb on the back says "set during the Malvinas War" (or, y'know, Falklands War I suppose) and I failed to chronologically connect that war, the dictatorship/disappearances, and the AIDS epidemic.
The big horrible beautiful pivotal things tend to be sort of overly dramatic and maudlin, looking back...good history but not good fiction necessarily. Toibin has this talent to write about said things while maintaining an edge that makes it real, makes it so ...more
