This has an excellent evocation of the life and crucifixion of the historical Jesus and all that implied for the subsequent writing of the Gospels, but I wasn't persuaded by Mary's voice or emotions. It's a pity that this Mary, so suppressed and repressed, wasn't more open to the revolutionary message of her son, but as she'd have said, "It wasn't worth it."

Always fun to get a literary take on the biblical story. Weirdly, echoed Bruce Chilton's thoughts on Mary Magdalene in Mary Magdalene: A Biography in tamping down the supernatural feel of the New Testament and making it more realistic. Possibly that is what the female point of view does, draws us closer to the real world of birth and death.

I read this novella in one sitting. A richly imagined vignette of Jesus's mother, whose voice was intentionally silenced by the apostles. I love any work of fiction that gives a voice to historical figures that have been silenced by the powers that be. (In this case they are religion & patriarchy.)
