Initially I was a little hesitant to start reading this novel thinking I wouldn't like it. I have to admit I was being judgy with the title. It felt like a throwback to my eighties childhood.
Once more I was so wrong. I should know by now that Mary Stewart knows how to tell a story and making it feel fresh and so believable. Epic! This is a fictional story of the youth of Merlin (King Arthur's Merlin) ... the first in a four book series... The Arthurian Saga.
We learn from his early childhood that Merlin was illegitimately born to royalty. His mother, the princess, gives an imaginary story of him being conceived in some magical way (made clear later in the book.) She was obviously trying to protect the child because of who his father was.
