This book. Holy hell THIS BOOK. It's fantastic. I find that the term "gripping" tends to be overapplied, but it's accurate in this case. I read this out loud with my boyfriend, and we both choked up at several points while reading; this is an intense and occasionally heart-rending story, one which makes nothing seem so perfect as a quiet and ordinary life. Zuckoff's commitment to his topic is perhaps verging on the slightly insane - most journalists would pause, probably several times, before committing their own cash to a venture as uncertain as the search for a plane lost on a Greenland glacier 70 years ago. That said, this is a must-read for fans of the exploration genre pioneered by the polar explorers. Best read outside in sunny weather to avoid hypothermia hypochondria. ...more

Story of war planes and those that flew them that crashed in Greenland during World War II. A thrilling story detailing the horrific details that these men, having survived the crash had to combat not only the hardship of the weather, but minimum communications with those that might save them because of the need to keep secret from the Germans that the Allied Forces had bases in Greenland.

Mitchell Zuckoff tells the story of men stranded in Greenland after plane crashes and the many ways of attempted rescue. One of the countless side-stories of WWII is the most incredible story of survival that I've ever read. In temperatures far below zero and with no gear designed for surviving on the ground, the pilot and his men fight together to stay alive and communicate for help.
