What Members Thought
I didn't realize this short, moving and often very funny (despite being serious) book was written in 1980 until I finished it. It's entirely modern in its concerns--class conflict, the nature of love, the search for purpose--but somehow simpler, and more civilized because of its subtlety, than most books published today. The writing is restrained but witty and she has a lovely clear-eyed kindness for her characters. The subplot involving a pet duck gone missing is delicious.
