This book, published in the 1950s, took me back to a different era of children's book publishing, and when I was a child I certainly still read a lot of books from this era. A slow pace, considering this is an adventure quest story; conscientious recreation of history; uncritical affirmation of past power structures (the individual slave is worthy and gets liberated; other slaves are content to serve; there is no critique of the institution of slavery as such); focus on male protagonists; a mean ...more

Rosemary Sutcliff has a way of making history come alive. I saw the movie first, and maybe that was a good thing for the movie was only somewhat like the book.
