(Book 1 of author's Alex Delaware/Milo Sturgis series.) This book apparently is Kellerman's first successful, published book. Kellerman fans of the Delaware series should enjoy it, but I don't rank it among his best books. When the Bough Breaks debuts Alex Delaware (child psychologist, now in early retirement) and LAPD detective Milo Sturgis and initiates their friendship. Psychiatrist Morton Hander and his partner are found brutally murdered with the only witness being a young child. Milo Sturgis is assigned to the case and he convinces his friend, retired psychologist Alex Delaware, to try to help the girl remember what she saw. Alex retired at a young age after dealing with a child molestation case. The beginning part of the book is good but the ending went a bit off the rails into macho action land.
