I first purchased this book at the Henry Miller library in the 1990s. I finally finished reading it and I realized that this version of Henry Miller, the 45 year old living in Big Sur with his wife and child, is a different version of the 1930's Paris Miller, but still Henry Miller. Between 4 and 5 stars, I choose to give 5 because of the importance of this book to me personally. I bought it in a small town in Nevada, on my way to California coast, through Big Sur. Started reading it during the trip, but realised that there's no way I can finish it there. It was not easy to read! But it was one of those "bigger than life" books that makes one think and ponder so many things, makes you want to write down quotes from it and re-read many sentences / paragraphs just because the
