The book is about the intertwining lives of members of two Native American families living on a reservation in mid-to-late 20th century North Dakota. It's really a collection of interconnected short stories, as opposed to a novel with a unified narrative. I loved many of the characters, most of whom had some real poignancy. This is one of my favorite books of all time; Erdrich is an excellent storyteller, and her style quickly made her one of my favorite authors. She is really phenomenal. What especially stands out to me with this story how she weaves together the Anglican fairy tales with the storytelling style of the Plains Natives.
Highly recommend.

Couldn't finish it. Every story is totally brutal, and I have a hard time liking pretty much any of the characters. The structure is more short-story collection than full-on novel, which is tough for me too. I love Louise Erdrich, and I'll keep reading her writing, but I just couldn't make it through this one.
