The cynical narrative voice in this 1962 political thriller/murder mystery, not to mention the the world-weary but sterling protagonists, Lt. Colonel Grau and Inspector Prevert, made this an engaging read. Though the reader knows the identity of the killer fairly early, the background story involving the plot to assassinate Hitler and the end and aftermath of the WWII more than compensates for this foreknowledge.
