I couldn't read this book for long stretches, but had to keep putting it down and doing something else to take a break from it. The central character, Baby has only her junkie father to look after her and he doesn't do that very well. The gritty reality of life as an unprotected child in a world where the adults are only too ready to either ignore her or use her leads Baby to make choices that we wish she wouldn't. O'Neill was definitely influenced by her childhood and created a wonderful, young and still-somewhat-naive character who has stayed with me. Like Chbosky...just the right balance of hopeful youth (or youthful hope) and shattered innocence. And not recommended reading for dark days...it's better to read it when you can appreciate the bleak circumstances instead of relate to them. ...more
