I don't ever remember finishing a book, putting it down, and saying aloud, "Well, that was a stupid book." Until now. The book had potential. It is about a young sex offender who is on probation and living under a bridge because he isn’t allowed to live within so many miles of day cares, schools, etc. He can’t leave the county, so under this bridge is the only place he can live. I did finish but it was a struggle. I found myself skimming which is unusual for me. The story was a little more interesting when The Professor came into the picture but not enough to save the book as far as I am concerned. I am intrigued by the question of who we really are. We show different faces at different times and circumstances. Does anyone really know who we are? Did the professor really know himself? The Kid? I loved this book. It drew you in from the second page and it was always hard to put down. I don't think this book is for everyone, but it really made me think about how we demonize individuals and society's need for protection against sexual criminals. It also makes you think a lot about our criminal justice system, pornography, and young adult sexuality. Again - not a read for everybody. But, really a great book until the end. A book that was hard to read. Expresses the reckless ease with which one can find themselves in a ruinous situation. Everything I never wanted to know about "sex offenders" and the wide range of offenses that put a person in that category.
