Very readable, comprehensive treatment of the combination of conditions and circumstances that made the Third Reich possible, and the tactical brilliance that took advantage of them and achieved it. At times the running litany of names got tedious and didn't add to overall understanding; I'd have preferred fewer details at times and more analysis. There are no new insights here, ...more

Probably the best history on the rise of the Third Reich that I've read (and I've read a number of them). Evans does something a bit different, shifting the focus away the figure of Hitler (essential as he was) and more toward the disparate and somewhat accidental historical roots of Nazism. There is of course antisemitism, that really took off in in the 1880s (and not just in Germany), but the fairly recent nation-state of Germany as it has hammered together by Otto von Bismark.
