I avoided coming-of-age books after Goldfinch. This was a good return to the genre. There isn't much in terms of plot but I kept turning the page. Docked a star for repeating information in the beginning.

4* for the writing, 2* for the plot. The plot contains: poverty, racial prejudice, ignorance, love, hate, feuds, shape-shifting – normal for a “gritty” novel.
