I enjoyed this book from beginning to end. One of the best things about this book is how well balanced it is. It has a historical multigenerational story and a multicultural theme, without becoming a millstone with too many characters and too much information. The characters were believable and had enough depth to make the reader want to know more. This book gets three stars because the author writes well. I confess to knowing little of Korean history prior to reading it, and a lot more now. It is more than a history lesson because it tells of the enormous effects on the family involved over three generations, and of the author's return (how much of this is autobiography and how much fiction?)to Korea.
