Thimble Summer is the 1939 Newbery winner. Not one of my favorites. It follows a series of adventures of Garnet, a girl growing up in rural Wisconsin in the 1930s. She finds a lucky silver thimble which she believes brings her luck and leads to all of her summer fun. After she finds the thimble, the drought ends, she has a fun adventure getting locked in the library, an adventurous boy wanders into town, and she takes her hog to the state fair. I feel pretty sure I read Thimble Summer when I was a little girl. I have a memory of disappointment; I was always hoping the thimble the main character, Garnet, finds would turn out to be magic. It wasn't. This book was one of my early attempts with and disappointments with realistic fiction (though I have learned to love it in recent years.)
