Nat has every reason to expect that he will be able to attend college and go on to a happy professional life. Then everything is taken away from him. This book is one of the higher rated Newbery winners that I hadn't yet read, so I was somewhat excited to read it. It is about the historical figure Nathaniel Bowditch, a mathematician born in Massachusetts just a few years before the United States declared independence. He was known primarily for his work on maritime navigation.

For a 1956 Newbery, this book isn't half bad. It even aroused a few chuckles. The 12-year-old and I read this to complement our early modern history lesson.
