During the Depression, fifteen year old Mary Alice is sent from Chicago to live with her grandma in rural Illinois while her parents get back on their feet. Her grandma is a quirky character who places no value in social mores and acts as she pleases. All the reviews I have read about this book talk about how funny and likable the grandma character is, but that isn't really how I saw it. Mary Alice goes to stay with her eccentric grandmother who lives in a small town during the Great Depression. She dreads staying in the small town, but comes to love the town and her grandmother so much that she begs to stay. Grandma is the highlight of the story.
