This book is so dark it's like a black hole - Fossum has me scared of little old ladies, for Pete's sake! She continually ratchets up the creepy until you can hardly stand it, and don't think that the ending lets up the tension, either. While our Norwegian brethren aren't known for their sunny crime fiction, this one ramps the noir up to a whole new level. Intense and scary-good.

Taut psychological mystery. This one has sort of Stephen King Misery overtones to it. Both the victim and killer in this book are emotionally crippled. Fossum does an excellent job at peeling back the layers of pain and motive, though I'd warn that it's not for the squeamish. Reminded me a bit of Ruth Rendell or Minnette Walters.
