Wow, it has been awhile since I have been able to read. Not a great last half of the year on the reading front. Looking forward to a nice long winter curled up in front of the fire reading and perhaps catching up. John picked this book up and though I think I had heard of the title, that was all I knew of it.

Given that I didn't grow up in the US, Flowers for Algernon was not on any of my reading lists at school. I had vaguely heard the name of the book bandied around, but it wasn't until it came up as a book club read for April that I decided to pick it up. I was so glad I did.

It's always interesting to go back and read the original source of something that's seeped into general cultural knowledge. I knew the story going in, of course--there have been too many homages and parodies not to. But now I can see why so many people have riffed on it. The concept is interesting, of course, but the execution was even better. The change in writing style as Charlie went up and down the IQ scale was subtle but convincing.
