The basic story is great - interesting setting and characters....and a story within a story.
Strong women going back through history, a mystery within a family, etc, etc. Very compelling.

The themes in this book remind me of Kate Morton's The Distant Hours. The main protagonist has left the family compound in New York State to pursue her career as a hydrologist in various Asian countries and has a relationship with a young man whose father is Japanese and his mother British. When she is called home for a family crisis she realizes why she left. She can't get along with her family but she ends up researching family history. Hokay, it's 2,5 stars but I round it up for one reason: Yoshi. The male character in this book, a cute Japanese/British guy who is obsessed with working in NGOs, what's not to like about that?? He's definitely my boyfriend material. LOL. But the story itself, it's pretty okay, combining a family history, suffrage movement in the States, and some mysteries from the past. Lucy Jarrett returns hoem to visit her mother after her mom has been in a minor car accident. Lucy finds some old papers hidden in the cupola of her families hosue and begins researching her families hidden history. The whole story just dragged on and on and it seemed to take forever for anything to happen. I really don't get what the whole point of the book is.
