Rebus has developed a substantial following in mystery circles, and it's to much rejoicing that Rankin was able to leverage recent changes in the Scottish police force to find a way for the retired detective to find himself back in the fray. I particularly like the way that this one unfolds out of a handful of small, seemingly disparate threads that gradually coalesce into a coherent story of crime. ...more

Another case of an author trying to retire a character and the readers won't let him. Rebus is back working cold cases, and, of course, doesn't follow orders. That's a good thing or he never would have gotten this one solved. A lot to be said for independent thinking and being just one thought ahead of the bad guy. Fantastic ending, don't peak! ...more
