Stick with it, I promise it does get better. The first third of the book does feel disconnected. But remember the story is being told from the perspective of Little Bit (Little Bit of a Hippie) and yes, you may feel annoyed by the hippies and the Free People (well, at least I did). At different points I wanted to shake Bit's parents and tell them to get it together; find a job, find a better home for Bit, take him to a speech therapist at least.
