I really wanted to give this three stars but then it had such an amazing and well written last few chapters. I guess i don't really understand or appreciate the idea of the cloistered monks with a vow of silence. There are so many more worthwhile things to do to worship God that is seems a bit self serving and dare I say useless. Louise Penny is so, so good. Another masterful addition to the Inspector Gamache series, this one set in a remote, claustrophobic monastery where the choir master has been murdered. This story explores the complex relationship between Gamache and his detective Jean-Guy Beauvoir, but I found myself missing Three Pines and it's inhabitants. And there was way more background on Gregorian chants than I really wished to know...but now I get to go on to the next in the series.

I like this series and find Chief Inspector Gamache an interesting character. This particular book seemed to drag just a bit for me and there seemed to be a bit too much repetition particularly when commenting on the personal feelings between Gamache and Francouer. but that is really a minor detail. not only has Louise Penny caused me to put Quebec on the short list for travel but now listening to Gregorian chants will be explored.
