Boyle's portrayal of the relationship between John and Iris is searing - the sheer realism of their relationship and how their life together is strained by emotional repression is stark and powerful, as well as a fitting counterpoint to the nature of Kinsey's research. John's relationship with Kinsey strikes a sharp note as well as he wrestles with what it means for him to be in thrall to an intellectual powerhouse.
