The plot here is clearly the sort of thriller Crais has made his name writing, but there's a depth of emotion in his description of the bond between Scott and Maggie that's unusual for the genre. A prime pick for people with warm thoughts of the animal bonds in their own lives. ...more

The mystery and some of the writing was meh, but I loved the dog and the chapters devoted to her.

This book only got four stars because the main protagonist, who puportedly loves his dog more than anyone else lets her ride unsecured in his car and he is not the most cautios of drivers.

This is the best book I've read that had a dog's point of view. That's because the dog, Maggie, was a dog. Her thoughts were "Scott is the pack alpha. I protect him. He gives me treats. I smell the crate. It smells safe. Scott is safe. Alpha happy, Maggie happy." That's how I think a dog thinks. I don't like books where the dog thinks or "talks" like a human.
