Reading this one for the second time, but this time with child #2. I saved it to share with my son when he was old enough because it's such a great story. Three thumbs up!

This was a bedtime read aloud for my 11-year-old, and we both loved it. While I had read good reviews about this book, it turned out to be much more than I had expected. Surprisingly, I enjoyed this book so much! I think most of my high rating came from the lovely Calpurnia and her relationship with her brothers ( she had 6 of them, can you imagine the craziness??). I love the subtle- yet clever- sense of humor along the story, the issue of feminism and science brought in the light tone, and of course, Calpurnia herself. She's easily likable and I long for more heroines like her in middle grade books.

Finally a "coming of age" book that isn't about sexuality, doesn't include vampires and is just simply a delight to read. No kid would be seen dead with it, but maybe, just maybe, they'll read it at 2 am with a flashlight so no one sees them enjoy it? This was just super!
So far, great! I'm on chapter 3. This is just plain great!! Nature journalers, Charlotte Mason homeschoolers and kids who love nature. ...more
