Carl Morck, along with Assad and Rose, are given a message written in blood found in a bottle. They eventually connect the bottle to the kidnapping of two children, one of whom was murdered. The book also tells the story from the POV of the kidnapper and his wife. The kidnapper has continued kidnapping children from large religious families and killing one once he has received the ransom to keep the families quiet.
