I really liked this book because it is so inspiring. A 17 year old Open Water gold medal swimmer literally bumps into a baby gray whale during her morning workout in the Pacific ocean.

This is a really short book, a long essay, really, about the author’s true encounter at age 17 with a lost baby gray whale. For some reason, Cox, a world-class sea swimmer, believes she can help the whale find its mother.

It’s an extraordinary tale, very well told. Cox uses the encounter with the whale as a jumping-off point for lots of explanations about the California coastal ecology, as well as philosophical musings about interspecies communication, hope, loss, and other big ideas.

A special and unique story of natural wonder made richer by its obvious emotional impact on Cox - a little gem.
