I REALLY enjoyed this book!! I'm so glad I chose it!! It is a Young Adult book, so there is a certain lack of complexity that is to be expected I guess, but still, caused me to give it less than 5 stars. The story takes place some time in the future - we are not told when, but the polar ice caps have disappeared, there are no more polar bears, the world seems to be out of petroleum, and many coastal cities are underwater. The world Bacigalupi has created is dense and rich with the dank future of an America corrupted by its own complacency and class differences. The story is fast-paced and quite thrilling, with multiple mini cliff-hangers. Ultimately though, its polish is its flaw - it is a bit too sleek sometimes, with the ideas mattering more than the people. Nailer and Nita remain symbols to me, rather than blossom into people.
