It also seemed like a partial retelling of Shawshank Redemption, which I loved, but which kind of tainted the book for me. As much as I adore Jodi Piccoult, I think Steven King is one of the greatest modern soft fiction writers, so he's pretty hard to directly compete with, I think.

Unless I'm reading a series (& expect to revisit characters) I don't like it when authors bring a character from one book into another. Jodi Picoult brought Ian Fletcher from her previous book into this book as a character & I thought it was a bit contrived. This book (unlike most of her others) didn't have that "wind knocked out of me" experience. It was a very well-written, interesting topic with complex characters.
