Having enjoyed Willig's first novel, The Secret History of the Pink Carnation, so when I was asked to review her newest release, I said yes. This stand alone novel is very different from the Pink Carnation. The Ashford Affair takes itself much more seriously than the Pink Carnation, leaning more towards the literary fiction rather than Willig's usual romance.

Another fantastic book by Lauren Willig. It spans present day New York to turn of the century London and even Kenya in the years between the wars. Clementine Evans discovers a life-changing secret concerning her Granny Addie after her grandmother's death. This then begins a sweeping family saga of two cousins and their descendants that includes love, betrayal and perhaps murder. Quite a page turner----once I began it was hard to put it down. ...more

Lacks some of the playful punch of Willig's Pink Carnation spy series and leaves one big question unanswered at story's end, but she does do a nice job of exploring the high and lows of friendship and what happens when an unequal balance between friends becomes untenable. Clemmie's a bit of a wet blanket, but there's good stuff to find if you're patient. ...more
