What I liked:
- Sumptuous prose that immersed me in a world of dripping leaves, heady scents, roaring storms and a deep sense of agricultural history.
- Complex characters with a rich inner life, richly-developed backstories, a sense of being at once rooted in a particular place and being 'out of' this place.

I read this book in December 2001 & didn't love this book the way I had her others. I read it again for our new book group & found that I had changed over the past 14 years & now thoroughly enjoyed each character in this book & especially the way that the stories wove together like honeysuckle vines in the back pasture. I am able to appreciate the character flaws/strengths as I see some if my own in the mirror.

Really enjoyed this Kingsolver book; maybe more than any others of hers, with the exception of The Poisonwood Bible. Kingsolver is just a very good writer and deeply develops her characters. I am giving it 4-1/2 stars in my Reading Log.
Not my favorite Kingsolver book, but fun to read all the same. This one is quite different from Kingsolver's other books. It's more of a mid-life, chick-lit/romance story than a "social awareness" kind of novel. A good book to read when you're in the mood for an escape.
