This was a quick read and a good little novel, but the portrayal of adolescent mental health was just all over the place, cliched, outdated, stereotypical, just plain wrong, etc. The main character just made no sense.

I picked this book because I needed a banned book for a challenge and I had no idea what it was about. I wasn't expecting to love the book but I do. The book is a series of letters written by Charlie to an anonymous friend as he is starting his first year of high school. As the reader I became the friend Charlie was writing to and I'll miss getting letters from him. I am writing to you because I know you will listen and understand what I am trying to say. I picked up this book because a 9th grade student recommended it to me. It is a epistolary novel written to a unknown person by a 9th grade student named Charlie. Charlie is the youngest of three children and has suffered his share of tragedy. If not for this being a book club pick, I would not have read it, nor would I have finished it. The issues are real for kids today, but I didn't really care too much about the main character, though I tried.
