3.5 stars - a great story that was liberating at the end. I would have rated this book higher, but there was too much foreshadowing. I think the reader figures out pretty quickly that something tragic and secret happened in the past - s/he doesn't need the message again and again. I like that the "big question / secret" is never truly spelled out - the reader is left to draw her own conclusion.
