I didn’t enjoy the larger storyline of this novel as much as Sing, Unburied, Sing, but I still love Ward’s prose. She has this talented way of writing from young characters’ perspectives so poetically and simplistically yet with keen insight and compassion. Esch lives amidst boys and men and has had to sacrifice her identity and body in order to survive. Brutal. Devastating. Jesmyn Ward wastes no time throwing us deep into raw, ugly survival of a family of five in the face of tragedy, poverty, and a category 5 hurricane. There is so much life and death packed in a few days’ time, such much desperation and slim survival, it’s almost too much at times.

Wow, first book in a long time that I have given 5 stars. Beautiful and haunting. It is one that I will keep and be happy that I have copy for my hands to hold. It is one that I will not likely loan out unless I have two copies on hand. anyone living along the gulf coast will be able to relate to the descriptions of hurricane preparations and affects of barometric changes.
