This book answers any questions you might have about what it is like to be shipwrecked on a remote, inhospitable island. In 1864 the schooner Grafton sailed into Carnley Harbour on Auckland Island, a remote atoll about 300 miles south of New Zealand. The five men aboard sought shelter from stormy seas, but their boat was torn off its anchor and smashed beyond repair on the rocks.

The men included a captain, first mate, and three young seamen. Together they used their wit and wisdom to survive man

This is a true story of perseverance and endurance in the face of extreme natural conditions. I was fascinated by the survivor's account. Contrasting the story of the Grafton castaways is the story of the crew of the Invercauld, whose shipwreck coincided in time with the Grafton's. Their fate however was starkly different as there was complete apathy and absence of leadership from the ship's captain George Delgarno and his mate Andrew Smith. It is January of 1864, and we are on Auckland Island, one of a collection of hostile, storm-prone subpolar islands some 300 miles southwest of New Zealand. A ship carrying five sailors crashes into the island, stranding the men and forcing them into a harrowing survival situation. But they have a few things going for them. Using their ingenuity and the remains of their wreck, the Grafton, they eke out an existence that is alternatively meager and passable. They build a cabin, make clothes out of ...more

So, when I read survival stories it makes me realize how much of a wuss I actually am. Yes, I probably would do better than I think I would do if my life depended on it, but man, the guys in this story were on top of it. They built a cabin, an iron forge, a still (I so would have needed that!), and created a fairly civilized existence on a remote and inhospitable island. And, to top it off, it is true. It puts anyone on Survivor or that new naked survivor show to shame.

Interesting account of an exploration to the Auckland Islands in the mid 1800. Tough going in that part of the world.

Another wonderful tale of survival in the wild. Actually, two tales of survival, one a kind of positive example and one a negative example. Highly readable and interesting.
