I read this more than 20 years ago and it clarified for me what a real saint is all about. Grandjean, the real life model for the main character, a Polish priest, helps me to keep believing in redemption for humanity.

I gave this excellent book 4-1/2 stars in my Reading Log. It was an amazing, captivating, illuminating, and challenging book of intimate portraits of the poor in Calcutta/Kolkata's City of Joy and the work among them that a Polish priest began when he moved into the slum. Both heart-rending and inspiring.
